Why do people play the Fretless Bass?
It's definitely not easier to play than any other Bass. As a matter of fact, it's more difficult.
Have you tried to play a be-bop line in tune on one? It's pure evil!
So what is it?
For some, it's purely about the tone.
These basses have a very beautiful, emotional singing tone to them.
For others, it's the look.
A Bass without lines can look very sexy indeed.
For some, they like the challenge that comes with playing one.
Playing it in tune can be one of the most difficult things to do well in the entire bass-playing world.
Owning and playing one is an entirely different world unto it's own.
You need to Setup your bass differently. With nothing on the board or in the way, the action can be super low and give your bass a healthy dose of "Mwaaaa" (my feeble text attempt at emulating it's sound).
You have another major worry when it comes to playing one: Intonation.
That is an evil term that means making sure that you are in tune correctly on the bass. Every note needs to be fairly in tune in order to get a decent sound that doesn't sound like you're barely getting there with each and every note that you strike.
Do you need some new ways to Practice your new bass? I've written a page for you so that you have some new ideas and material to look over when you're working to get better.
Just because you're playing one doesn't mean you can't have Lines to help you along. Some people believe that Lines are akin to cheating, but they are actually very helpful and in some cases, almost required.
There are a lot of new things to learn when you decide to play one. I've written a page on Tips That can help you to become a better player.
Luckily for you, if you choose to take up this beautiful, but terribly evil axe (Not really :), you'll have this site. I'll be here to answer any questions you might have and hopefully, I'll be able to guide you in the best way possible of making sure that you are playing it better and more in tune.
The Fretless bass is a beautiful and sometimes misunderstood instrument. Take the time to get to know it and you wont be disappointed.
