How to Play Bass Guitar
Welcome to the world of the Bass Guitar!
I hope to be able to teach you how to play bass as quickly and as well as possible without overwhelming you in the process.
If you've ever been to any number of other lesson sites on the web, you might have noticed that many of them are disorganized and difficult to navigate. And many of the ones that are organized tend to be overwhelming in the way that they present information to you. They might jump from one topic to the next without giving you a solid idea of what just happened. It's like being hit by a tornado made of riddles. Sounds funny, but really, it just blows :)
Not only that, but most of those are geared towards guitar players with a small, rather terrible section for bass shoved in a corner somewhere. You don't deserve that! You're better than that.
That is why this website is here.
I've been playing bass for a while now, and I've noticed that there doesn't seem to be as much in the way of instruction sites for bass players as there are for any other instrument out there.
It is my hope that you'll find everything that you need to know here and that you wont need to go through all of that.
On this site, there are a number of lessons on each topic, from playing major and minor scales to hand position. I feel that it is best to give each idea an entire page rather than shove 5 or 6 ideas onto one page without a decent explanation on any one of them as an individual thought.
On the following pages, instead of giving you 200 links to follow and hoping that you'll find the right one, I've placed links to the first page of each lesson. from there, you can choose to continue to follow the subsequent lessons in order, or you can jump around.
I have also organized a Sitemap for you on the left hand Navbar that will lead you to any of the lessons on my site in an easy to follow fashion (This particular part is the Play Bass or Playing the Bass Button).
If you're new to playing the bass, or even if you've been playing for a while now, you will want to take a look at my page on Hand Position and Posture due to the fact that, if you make some of these mistakes, you might not be able to play bass without pain eventually!
Next, you may want to take a look at my page on the Names of the Strings. There is nothing that is as important to a beginning player as knowing what the strings are that they are playing on. This is also the first step to learning quite a few other things as well, so it's good to get these down as soon as possible.
Are you having trouble Getting Good Tone? Or do you want a few tips to make your bass sound big, fat and powerful? I've written a page just on that alone, so be sure to take a look at it for some tips and tricks.
What do you think is one of the main things that separates Professional Bass Players from Beginners? You might be surprised to learn that the answer is Inflection! Learn a few tips here!
Want to throw some spicy extras into your basslines? Why don't you take a look at my page on Trills, Bends, Hammer-ons and Pull-offs? You just might find a couple new ways to make your basslines come alive!
Are you looking to learn to Play the Bass seriously? You'll want to take a look at the following pages then:
- Playing Arpeggios
- Playing Chords
- Playing Scales
If you have any problems at all with anything on my site, remember to contact me on my Contact Us page. I will try to get back to you ASAP.
Remember, the most important thing is to have fun. If you aren't having fun when you play bass, then learning becomes a chore. Try to stick with it through the tough times and you'll be rewarded many times over (mwahahaha) :)
